How to Grant Access to Your Chrome Web Store Extension: The 2026 Guide

When your Chrome Extension starts to grow, you shouldn’t be the only one who can push a hotfix or update a store listing. However, if you are looking for a simple “Add User” button in an individual developer account, you won’t find one. To allow a teammate to manage your extension, you must transition to Group Publishing.

Since your teammate shares your company email domain, here is the exact workflow to set this up and avoid the common “missing permissions tab” trap.

Step 1: The Teammate’s Prerequisite

Before you can add anyone, they must have their own registered developer identity.

  • Ask your teammate to sign in to the Chrome Developer Dashboard.
  • They must pay the one-time $5 USD registration fee.
  • Crucial: They must use their company email that matches your domain.

Step 2: Create a Google Group

Google uses Google Groups as the “key” to manage team permissions.

  1. Go to Google Groups.
  2. Create a new group (e.g., extension-admins@yourcompany.com).
  3. Add your teammate as a member of this group.
  4. Security Setting: Ensure “Who can join” is set to “Invited users only” to keep your store secure.

Step 3: Activate Group Publishing

Individual accounts do not have a “User Permissions” tab. To unlock team features, you must link your account to the group you just created.

  1. Open your Developer Dashboard.
  2. Click on the Account (gear icon) on the left-hand menu.
  3. Scroll down to the Group Publisher section.
  4. Select your new Google Group from the dropdown and click Create Group Publisher.
  5. Note: You can only create one Group Publisher per lifetime on your account.

Step 4: Transfer the Extension to the Group

By default, your extension is owned by you personally. You must move it to the Group to share access.

  1. In the dashboard, find your extension and click Edit.
  2. Look for the More Actions (three dots) menu in the upper corner.
  3. Select Transfer to Group Publisher.
  4. Once transferred, everyone in that Google Group can now manage the listing.

Common Mistakes Checklist (Don’t Get Stuck!)

  • The “One-Time” Rule: Ensure your group name is correct. You only get one Group Publisher activation per account.
  • The $5 Fee: Your teammate must pay the fee, or they will not see the dashboard even after being added to the group.
  • Context Switching: Remind your teammate to use the dropdown at the top right of the dashboard to switch from their “Personal” view to the Group Publisher view.
  • Syncing: After adding a member to the Google Group, it can take up to 30 minutes for the permissions to sync with the Chrome Console.
