Managing a website is enough work without having to log into three different platforms just to keep your online presence alive. If you are currently hosting your site on WordPress.com but your domain is still sitting at GoDaddy, you are dealing with split billing and unnecessary complexity.
Consolidating your domain and hosting under one roof simplifies your workflow and often provides better integration for security and DNS management. Here is the definitive guide to migrating your domain from GoDaddy to WordPress.com.
Phase 1: Preparing Your Domain at GoDaddy
Before WordPress.com can request the transfer, you must “unlock” the domain at the current registrar. Think of this as giving GoDaddy permission to let the domain leave.
1. Locate the Transfer Settings
Log in to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio. Click on the specific domain you want to move to open the Domain Settings page.
Pro Tip: In the current 2026 GoDaddy interface, navigate to Manage Domain > Registration Settings. You will find the Transfer card located in the bottom right corner of the dashboard.
2. Unlock the Domain
By default, all domains have a “Transfer Lock” enabled to prevent unauthorized hijacking.
- Look for the Domain Lock status.
- Toggle it to OFF.
- You may receive a security prompt or email to confirm this action; approve it immediately.
3. Disable Domain Privacy
If you pay for WHOIS Privacy or “Full Domain Protection,” you should temporarily disable it. If the privacy service is active, it may mask the administrative email address needed to verify that you are the true owner of the domain.
4. Request the Authorization Code (EPP Code)
This is the most critical step. Click on “Get Authorization Code” (sometimes labeled as an EPP code). GoDaddy will either display this code on the screen or email it to the administrative contact on file. Copy this code and keep it secure.
Phase 2: Initiating the Transfer at WordPress.com
Now that the domain is “free,” you need to tell WordPress.com to go get it.
1. Navigate to the Domain Manager
Log in to your WordPress.com account and select your site. In the left-hand sidebar, go to Upgrades and then click on Domains.
2. Add Your Existing Domain
Click the Add a domain button in the top right corner. From the options provided, select “Use a domain I own.”
3. Choose the Transfer Option
You will see two choices: Connect your domain (Mapping) or Transfer to WordPress.com. Select Transfer to WordPress.com.
4. Enter the Authorization Code
WordPress.com will ask for your domain name and the Authorization Code (EPP code) you copied from GoDaddy earlier. Paste the code into the field and click Continue.
5. Extension and Payment
ICANN regulations typically require a domain transfer to include a one-year registration extension. You will be prompted to pay for this extra year. Note that this doesn’t “reset” your time; it simply adds 12 months to your existing expiration date.
Phase 3: The Handshake
Once you have paid, the transfer enters a “Pending” state.
- The GoDaddy Email: Shortly after starting the process, GoDaddy will send an email titled “Transfer request for [[suspicious link removed]].”
- Manual Approval: Open this email and click the button to Approve Transfer.
- The Timeline: If you manually approve the transfer via the email, the process can be completed in as little as 30 minutes. If you do not manually approve it, GoDaddy will automatically release the domain after 5 to 7 days.
